Reston Montessori School Parent Teacher Association (RMS PTA)

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year!

For those of you who may not be familiar with the RMS Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves. If you are a returning family, we look forward to getting reacquainted!

Below we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the RMS PTA and what we do. If you have any additional questions, please contact us at: PTARMS@gmail.com.

What is the RMS PTA?

The RMS PTA views our role as a community builder. Powered by the volunteer participation of parents, we seek to provide events and activities that connect students, teachers and families; promote the welfare of our children; and foster the school's exceptional and caring learning environment.

The RMS PTA is an independent organization that works closely with the RMS administration to ensure our support and activities are aligned with the school's mission and needs.

Here are just a few examples of the things the RMS PTA does throughout the year:

  • Pizza Fridays (one day a week you don’t have to make lunch!)
  • The online school directory, powered by Classroom Parent
  • The monthly “RMS PTA Update” e-newsletter
  • Monthly PTA-sponsored programs—like the ever-popular Family Yoga Night and the RMS Alumni Panel
  • School-wide community service projects
  • School enrichment programs—like Grace Arts
  • Social events—like Skate Nights and Family Dinners Out at local restaurants
  • Spring Staff Appreciation Week
  • The “Best Ever” Spring School Carnival

Your PTA membership dues help support these activities and much, much more ...

What are the annual membership dues and benefits of joining the RMS PTA?

Annual PTA membership dues are just $18 per family. As part of your membership, you get a $10 discount on each child signed up for "Pizza Friday." Plus, by joining the PTA you have the satisfaction of knowing your dues are supporting the many social, educational and school-improvement activities the PTA sponsors (see above).

What are “Pizza Fridays” and how do I sign up?

Starting in early October and continuing every Friday throughout the school year, the RMS PTA coordinates lunchtime pizza delivery to all toddler, primary, and elementary classrooms. Eagerly anticipated by students, teachers and parents alike, it’s the one day a week you don’t have to make lunch!

The cost for the year is $90/student ($80/student for PTA members), which comes to less than $2.75 per Friday lunch—a real deal! To sign up your child, simply complete the PTA membership/pizza registration form (available at the “PTA Information Station” near the front door) and return it with a check made out to “RMS PTA.”

We rely on parent volunteers to deliver the pizzas to classrooms each Friday. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Pizza Coordinator Nancy Cazenas at ncazenas@navigationarts.com.

(Note: If you wish to sign your child up for the “Pizza Friday” program after October, please contact Nancy Cazenas at ncazenas@navigationarts.com.)

What are the monthly PTA meetings all about?

Nearly every month, the PTA sponsors a special program on a topic or theme of interest to the RMS community. Some of these programs are “parent focused” and feature experts discussing various topics about raising healthy and happy children (free childcare is available so parents can attend). Other programs are for the whole family—like the always-popular Family Yoga Night. Each year we also organize a panel of RMS alumni to discuss their RMS experiences and “life after RMS.”

Information about each program is publicized in the monthly “PTA Update” e-newsletter and on fliers around the school. If you have a program idea or question about a program, please contact Program Coordinator Michelle DiCintio at m.dicintio@hotmail.com.
